I should have thought more before cutting...................

Oops..........when the pattern calls for choosing "three fabrics that work well together"....think about where they are going........the fabrics in the bottom block "work well" together - but the star is lost........so it was back to the cutting board...............the star at the top is my second effort......

..........and I have decided I am not very good at "random"...the pattern calls for the star points to be a different fabric to the star centres.....I couldn't cope with that....so my points will be the same as the centres!
The pattern - Suzie's Sweet Shoppe by Janelle Wind was a surprise "just because" gift from my daughter.....she doesn't quilt but calls in to the Patchwork Apple from time to time to buy things for me....nice huh!
Speaking of the Patchwork Apple.....I "had" to go there yesterday to get some background fabric for the Christmas stitcheries I have been working on.....while I was there I bought a layer cake of the Verna range to make the star quilt........

..........so here is my progress to date.....I think I will continue this top at the Mannum retreat in a couple of weeks........working with a layer cake makes it a very portable project......the plain fabric behind the blocks will be the sashing fabric......

I also finished the Paper Bag quilt block and returned it to the Patchwork Apple......it wasn't due for a couple of weeks...but I wanted to get it done and back....my time to stitch is a bit limited with going back to work.....I must say though it is great to be back - keeping busy is just what I need at the moment.

'Til next time..................Lorraine

It is your quilt & you can make it the way you want. I can see your star points definitely got lost on the first attempt. The star is quite prominent in the second.

I've seen that Verna fabric in my local quilt shop. Very pretty. As for sewing star blocks, or any blocks for that matter, we always need to think about value. It's a difficult term to describe - the lightness to darkness of a fabric - but it's definitely worth knowing about. An interesting fact - quilters (especially new quilters) are most often drawn to medium value prints. We must work hard to include lights and darks in our selections. That's a good reason to buy light value fabrics whenever you step into a quilt shop.

Ahhh.... now I see! I like the stars where the centre and points match. Very nice. I stood there (patchapple) for an hour agonising over Verna! I so wanted to get some, but just couldn't think of a project to "assign" it to!!! Lol, I'm back there on Friday for sit and sew and figured I will have thought of something by then!

I couldn't see the green star at first, you could have made the points with the pink fabric, I'm not very good at picking colours/patterns, I often get the Mister to do it, he looks at it a bit differently to how I see it (does that make sense??)

Fresh, crisp, lovely fabrics. And what a lovely daughter to gift you with a project!
Been there, done that, as far as lost star points.

I always end up with that situation in a mystery quilt...Very pretty blocks on the second try, the points stand out with nice contrast.

I'm doing this pattern as well. I am using 3 different fabrics. makes it very busy but I love it. Lots of cutting and small pieces, but fun to do. Your daughter is so sweet. I have 4 boys!!! xx
